MA/IN24 – SIDEREAL
MA/IN Festival 2024
SIDEREAL combines the past and present while projecting into the future with a hybrid and modern musical language. The project combines ancestral and ethnic percussion instruments with electronic compositions, culminating in a live performance during the artistic residency in Brienza, a town undergoing cultural and touristic transformation. PERC+ enhances historical spaces through sound performances, merging musical culture and territorial promotion. The residency involves the entire local community and hosts artists from across Europe, fostering cultural exchange. Local hospitality, economic, and social activities actively participate in the project, generating economic and cultural growth. Prestigious partnerships with the MA/IN festival, various Italian conservatories, and other institutions stimulate cultural dissemination and education. The project aims to ensure continuity through the release of an album with the Stradivarius Milano label, concerts in towns across the region in 2025, and outreach activities in national and international production centers, experimental music festivals, and workshops.

momentum "I": death & escape (2019)
for bass flute and live electronics
"momentum 'I': death & escape" (2019), commissioned by the 20th Weimarer Frühjahrstage für zeitgenössische Musik, explores sonic boundaries for bass flute and live electronics. At its core, the piece weaves a continuum of rhythmic, repetitive figures that intertwine with the electronically generated counter-rhythms, and intricate timbral spaces creating an immersive dialogue. The electronics, shaped by impulse responses drawn from the bass flute's resonant characteristics, form a hybrid acoustic landscape, extending the instrument’s sonic possibilities. The result is an electrified experience, a meeting of acoustic and electronic realms. Dedicated with deep gratitude to Carin Levine, the work seeks to push the listener’s perception of sound and space.
Axis Mundi: A Convergence of Worlds (2024) • Central and Eastern European Game Studies conference
Axis Mundi: A Convergence of Worlds (2024) is an interactive network-based audio installation that invites multiple participants to engage through their smartphones. Using data such as spatial information and XYZ coordinates, participants influence an evolving soundscape that resynthesizes immersive audio drawn from various digital games. The installation allows users to collectively shape both the spatial and timbral elements of the sound in real time, creating a dynamic auditory experience. Commissioned by the CEEGS2024 Conference, this work highlights the fusion of digital interaction and artistic expression in a unique, collaborative performance environment.

Tandem (2024)
for soprano, baritone, and orchestra
"Tandem" is a project inspired by the homonymous text of the Greek poet Orfeas Apergis. The composition aspires to evoke a vocal dialogue with our inner self, the subconscious, or the mind during moments of void and despair within a toxic relationship. It manifests dualism through feminine and masculine characters, which ultimately dissolve into a sexless, internal battle in search of the true self, the true choice, and the truth. The vocalists are envisioned as a single vocal entity, magnified by the imposing presence of a grand orchestra. This composition conjures an augmented vocal amalgamation, a unified vocal body of harmonic and rhythmic multiplicities that evolve organically over time. In this work, text, meaning, and music are seamlessly fused into a singular entity, creating an intricate tapestry of sound and emotion.
Composing for Voices and Orchestra was the challenge set to young composers by Gulbenkian Music as part of a workshop organized by enoa - European Network of Opera Academies. Over the course of about seven months and under the guidance of composer and conductor Luca Francesconi, six young composers had the opportunity to create new works that will be premiered in this concert by the Gulbenkian Orchestra and soloists Camila Mandillo (Soprano), Marcos Alves dos Santos (Tenor) and André Henriques (Baritone). A new work by Luca Francesconi, commissioned by the Gulbenkian Foundation, will also be premiered.

Ex-Sentia Ensemble was formed in 2020 by Miguel Fernández (saxophone), Jacob Mason (piano) and Santiago Villar (percussion), as a response to certain concerns: the longed-for immediacy pursued by today's society, digitalization, and the duality between the person and the virtual self in virtual spaces.
In the face of all of this, Ex-Sentia seeks through music to make its audience reflect, while at the same time opening the doors to experimentation in terms of sound. Taking Trio Accanto as its most direct influence, this ensemble introduces a fourth component to this formation (piano, saxophone, percussion), through the incorporation of the audiovisual media of our era. Hence ''Ex-sentia'': the desire to reach deep into today's music, while maintaining the link with the traditional instrumental era.
In the past years, Ex-Sentia has performed in Spain, Switzerland, Austria and for the global event Earth Day Art Model 2021. The Ensemble is committed to collaborating directly with the composers through new commissions (Isaac Roth, Dorothy Hindman, Beatriz Fraile, Giordano Bruno and Greg Watson) and recordings (Simon Steen-Andersen, Hans Thomalla, Nuño Fernández Ezquerra, Sohui Jeong, Charles Norman Mason).
in dysto (2023) / STYLIANOS DIMOU
"in dysto" is an extended, mixed electroacoustic composition that explores the concept of sonic hybridity through recursive processes of structural de/re-construction. Drawing inspiration from the resonance profiles of both natural materials and synthesized resonances, the work delves into the realm of unpredictable resonant behaviors. By merging resonance and behaviour, a unified concept is formed that mirrors the aesthetic and technical characteristics inherent in the electroacoustic elements, thereby resulting in an electrifying sonic experience.
Through meticulous construction and dissolution, conducted at both micro and macro levels, self-referential blocks of sonic action are harmoniously reconciled, ultimately giving rise to a dystopian landscape characterized by emergence and collision. The deliberate utilization of recursion and repetition serves to push the boundaries of the electro/acoustic material and the synergies observed during performance, while subjectively alluding to a transformative shift from utopia to dystopia.

The Columbia Hellenic Studies department presents an evening of music and poetry readings in celebration of the poet Constantine P. Cavafy. A diverse program of compositions by Marcos Balter, Zosha di Castri, Stylianos Dimou, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Lena Platonos, and Georgios Poniridis, will be performed by the National Sawdust Ensemble under the music direction of Jeffrey Zeigler, with Greek guest musicians Yiannis Palamidas (voice) and Stergios Tsirliagos (synths). Cavafy poems will be recited in Greek and/or Arabic as well as new writing prepared for the occasion by some of the most exciting living poets. The program draws its title from Cavafy’s many works named “Days of,” reflecting on a year of his life.

In this concert, we present a set of electronic compositions based on materials generated by the Demiurge audio synthesis engine, a music machine-learning platform. Demiurge consists of a tripartite neural network architecture developed by Roberto Alonso, Marek Poliks, and a team of collaborators at the Hong Kong Baptist University. Debris indexes a subset of Demiurge’s massive output database as waste material ripe for creative reconsumption. Working with Debris invokes an array of concepts that range from archaeomusicology to new materialism; Debris positions its human and nonhuman collaborators within a network, a Deleuzian assemblage, an Adornian constellation, a swarm intelligence, a xenobestial orgy, a platform. These human-in-the-loop interactions were begotten by Mariam Gviniashvili, Kyoka, Dariush Derakhshani, David Q. Nguyen, Bihe Wen, Stylianos Dimou and Iván Ferrer-Orozco.
